Roaming Around The Island
After years of heading to the Galle/Unawatuna/Weligama trifecta and with the additional help of a completed highway, I made my way to the insta-famous horse-shoe bay of Hiriketiya.
A wildlife safari in Udawalawe is the best place to experience elephants roaming free in their natural habitat… it’s a third the size of Yala National Park and typically less crowded during peak tourist season.
Explore the UNESCO World Heritage site, Galle Fort, where 17th-century ramparts enclose crumbling colonial buildings on bustling narrow streets.
Weligama is our favorite morning surf spot with waves that are relatively mild and consistent for beginner surfers or those brushing up on their skills before heading to more advanced spots around the Island.
Tucked away on the hillside north of Unawatuna beach is the impressive Japanese Peace Pagoda. It also offers incredible views towards Galle Fort and is the perfect place to take in the always impressive Sri Lankan sunsets.
Walk down to a reef-protected stretch where the water is relatively calm for a dip in the ocean. It’s quite popular for families with young kids for this very reason.
